An Academic Innovation: Blended Learning and Workplace Practicum

In 2001, Dr. Serafin Talisayon started to teach Technology Management 298 (Knowledge Management) at the Technology Management Center, University of the Philippines. He introduced several innovations in this course centered around each student performing workplace knowledge management (KM) practicums with the permission of, and in consultation with, the student's superior.

Over the last 20 years, about one-third of KM practicums ended up being adopted by the student's organization as part of its standard operating procedures, or even cascaded or replicated in other teams or units of the organization - evidence that the superior appreciated the organizational benefits from knowledge management.

In addition, the student learned through actual practice - a more powerful method of learning compared to learning from reading, listening to lectures or reviewing for written examinations.
